The president of the Initiative for Science in Europe, Martin Andler, announced on September 1, 2022, the appointment of Dr. Monica Dietl as its new executive coordinator. She succeeds Dr. Marco Masia, to whom the President is very grateful for his commitment and extraordinary service to the Association since 2019.
Dr. Dietl will bring to ISE her extensive perspective on European science policy issues and will bring to her new position the energy and competence that she has displayed in her previous jobs.
Neurobiologist, Research Director at CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), Monica Dietl has conducted research at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris (UPMC), at the University of Vienna, at Sandoz Ltd. in Basel and at the Collège de France in collaboration with Rhône Poulenc Santé S.A. in Paris, before becoming involved in Research Policy. Her most recent position was as Coordinator of the Europe Action Plan and Advisor to the Director General of the Directorate General for Research and Innovation at the French Ministry for Higher Education Research and Innovation between May 2019 and August 2022. Previously, she has been the director of the Brussels office of the CNRS between 2001 and 2005. She then became Senior Policy Officer for the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, involved in the creation of the ERC (2005-2009), before coming back as director of the CNRS Brussels office. In 2011 she was appointed as the head of the COST Office, in charge of setting up the COST Association of which she became the first director between 2014 and 2016. Between 2016 and 2019, she was Senior Advisor in the European and International Affairs of the CNRS, while founding “Europe Matters”, a consultancy, and working as Senior Expert for Science|Business Publishing Ltd.
Dr Dietl has a very broad European perspective, with German and Spanish as mother tongues, and excellent knowledge of French and English. She went to school in the German High School San Miguel in Madrid, obtained her Diplom at the University of Vienna (Austria), her Masters and PhD at the Pierre-et-Marie-Curie University in France. She worked as a doctoral student at the Lainz Hospital in Vienna and as post-doctoral researcher at Sandoz in Basel before joining the CNRS in France.
